Since the late 1970s, the urban landscape of Beijing, blighted by shoddy buildings that have increasingly dwarfed the scant remains of the old city, has been further scarred by public sculptures rendered in cement, steel, aluminium and glass. The first example of post-Mao public art was firmly in the tradition of high monumental socialism. Great Achievements was an 8.7-metre group sculpture set up at the northern or front entrance of the Mao whose function is for gatherings of musical friends or to accompany seasonal activities, the modern Chinese orchestra is for concert performance, just like its counterpart in the West.
